In 1898, Edouard Féret wrote in his guide that Château Badette had “always been classed at the top of the second growths of Saint-Emilion. Exceptionally well maintained, it produces an average of 50 tonneaux of a delicate, soft, perfumed wine, perfectly preserved.” So, wine has flowed through its tanks for more than a century, but with the care and attention of its new owners, these comments written in the 19th century have regained their full relevance.
In fact, when Marc Vandenbogaerde acquired Château Badette in 2012, he embarked on a complete refurbishment of the property. Starting from scratch, he brought this great Saint-Emilion estate back to life. The vineyard was reorganised with the support of Xavier Choné, an expert in winegrowing soils. These were analysed and the most appropriate rootstocks were identified. Massal selection then enabled all the parcels to be replanted by stages. At the same time, the wine-making installations were completely renewed. The old winery was demolished replaced by new buildings housing modern equipment, making it possible to vinify the fruit from different parcels separately, and a densimetric sorter for the grapes.
These innovations rapidly yielded new value. Quantities rose and the wine’s quality was enhanced. These improvements were recognised in steadily more positive tasting comments delivered over the years.
In 2020, Arnaud Vandenbogaerde took over management of the estate. Following in his father’s footsteps, he focussed on biodiversity, implementing the incorporation of green manure into the soil, mating disruption and rational pesticide use. He also introduced an ecological garden. These developments earned Château Badette level 4 High Environmental Value (HVE) certification.

Since 2022, Château Badette has been one of the newcomers to the Saint Emilion “Grands Crus Classés” classification, recognition of the work accomplished, which was Marc Vandenbogaerde's wish. Arnaud has brilliantly continued his father's vision!
The estate is now recognized as one of the best vineyards in Saint-Émilion.
